★Hi and Goodbye - Natural English
[2014/01/11]

by Alex Conley

I’m always surprised at how well Japanese people are at saying hello in English. From a young age, most Japanese people know how to say and respond to “Hi, how are you?” But there is one area that I think can be improved - saying “See you later.”

Most Japanese people I have met say, “See you,” when saying goodbye, but it doesn’t sound correct. In the 1990s “See ya,” became a popular way of saying goodbye in America, but it isn’t said often anymore. Most native speakers of English say “See you _________ .”

Here are some examples:

See you later.See you then.See you again.See you soon.See you next time.See-ya.   (The sounds are blended and ‘you’ is not pronounced much)

Also, the time you will meet a person again can be used:

See you tomorrow.

See you on (Tuesday).

See you next week.

See you next month.

See you next year.

Other common ways to say goodbye are:

Bye

Bye bye

Take care.

If you change the way you say goodbye, it will help your English sound more natural.

いかがでしょうか?

Alex先生のお話によると、

日本の皆さんは英語で「こんにちは!」の挨拶は正しく言えているようですが、別れ際の挨拶がもうひと息の様ですね。ネイティブスピーカーの様に英語を話したければ、

See you later.

See you tomorrow.

See you next week.

See you again.

See you soon.

See you next time.

See you then.

をぜひ使ってみてくださいね♪
